First cultivated nearly 6,000 years ago in China, Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) — also known as Common Buckwheat or Beech Wheat — is one of the most versatile and productive cover crops available. Despite the name, buckwheat is not related to wheat or grass at all. It is a fast-growing, warm-season, broad-leaved annual that reaches 24–36 inches tall with triangular leaves and multiple shallow white blooms that attract bees in extraordinary numbers. A strong colony can glean 10 pounds of honey per day from buckwheat; one acre can produce up to 150 lbs of dark, rich buckwheat honey per season. Converts nitrogen back into the soil while minimizing erosion, drainage issues, and weeds. No serious pests — in fact, known to deter insects. Culinary & Other Uses

Fed to livestock as a forage crop with roughly the feed value of oats. Seeds are triangular and dark-colored, resembling beech tree seeds — hence the name “beech wheat.”

Growing Notes

As a cover crop: Broadcast 2–3 lbs per 1,000 sq ft directly in early spring or summer; lightly rake and tamp (½ inch deep). Mow when approximately 50% of the crop has bloomed — before it goes to seed — and mulch back into soil as green manure. Optimal growing temperature 70–80°F. Full sun.

For traditional harvest: Plant ½ inch deep, 10–12 inches apart in average, loamy, well-drained soil in full sun. Germinates in 6–12 days. No thinning necessary.
