Bozeman Watermelon — The Montana Heirloom That Ripens Where Others Won’t

Bozeman Watermelon is the watermelon for northern gardeners who have given up on getting melons to ripen. Developed in Bozeman, Montana specifically for short-season growing areas with cooler nights, this light green, smooth speckled watermelon matures in just 70–80 days — early enough to beat the first frost in most northern climates. The slightly pear-shaped fruits are impressively large for such an early variety, averaging 10–15 pounds with some reaching 18 pounds, and the thick pink-red flesh has excellent flavor with very few seeds.

One of its most remarkable qualities: Bozeman lasts up to a month after picking — exceptional shelf life for a fresh-eating watermelon. An excellent choice for northern home gardeners and short-season commercial growers alike.

Why Grow Bozeman Watermelon?

  • Short-season 70–80 days — ripens where other watermelons fail in northern climates
  • Large 10–18 lb fruits — impressive size for such an early variety
  • Thick pink-red flesh, few seeds — excellent flavor and eating quality
  • Lasts up to a month after picking — exceptional post-harvest shelf life
  • Montana heritage — developed in Bozeman for cool-night, short-season performance
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost — watermelons resent root disturbance, so use biodegradable pots. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed when soil has warmed to at least 65°F. Space plants 36–48 inches apart in full sun. Use black plastic mulch to warm soil and speed maturity in short-season climates. Water consistently but reduce as fruits approach maturity. Harvest when the tendril nearest the fruit dries and the underside turns yellow.
