Grow a versatile red tomato for everyday summer meals with Bonny Best. This open-pollinated heirloom produces smooth, globe to slightly flattened fruits with juicy, meaty flesh and classic sweet-tart tomato flavor. Slice a ripe fruit for lunch, chop a few into salsa, or cook your harvest into a fresh sauce.
Start indoors 6β8 weeks before your intended transplant date. Sow approximately ΒΌ inch deep in seed-starting mix, provide warmth for germination, and give seedlings strong light. Harden off gradually before transplanting outdoors after frost danger has passed and soil has warmed.
Choose full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Install sturdy stakes, cages, or a trellis at planting time. Water consistently at soil level, mulch to conserve moisture, and maintain airflow around plants. For square foot gardening, use 1 plant per sq ft (trellis required) with dedicated vertical training and regular pruning. Allow more room for caged or multi-stemmed plants.
Maturity: Approximately 75β80 days from transplant; conditions affect timing.
Fruit: Smooth red globe to slightly flattened globe, commonly around 5β8 oz with natural variation.
Growth: Indeterminate, regular leaf; support required.
Botanical name: Solanum lycopersicum.
Life cycle: Frost-tender warm-season annual.
Packet options: Approximately 25 or 50 seeds.
Harvest when fruits are fully red and yield slightly to gentle pressure. Pick progressively as individual tomatoes ripen, handle gently, and enjoy fresh or cooked.
