Blacktail Mountain (Citrullus lanatus) was developed by Glenn Downs of the Sand Hill Preservation Center in Idaho in the cool summers of the 1970s β the quintessential icebox watermelon that sets the standard for flavor. Loaded with sweet red flesh, most famous for ripening in just 65 days. Excellent keeping quality β harvest just before ripe and melons will finish in storage, lasting up to two months. Outstanding yields.
Start indoors 3β4 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed into warm soil in full sun. Space plants 3β4 feet apart. Water consistently. Harvest just before fully ripe β melons will finish in storage. Excellent for short-season and northern gardens.
