Black Beauty Eggplant, Heirloom Seeds

Grow the classic eggplant for thick grilled slices, bubbling Parmesan, and hearty stuffed dishes. Black Beauty produces large, glossy, deep-purple fruits with a mild flavor that fits beautifully into summer cooking. This open-pollinated heirloom has been grown since its introduction in 1902, giving gardeners a familiar favorite for the warm-season vegetable bed.

Why Grow Black Beauty?

  • Classic large purple fruit: Plump oval to egg-shaped eggplants with glossy, nearly black-purple skin.
  • Versatile in the kitchen: Grill, bake, stuff, or add to stir-fries and eggplant Parmesan.
  • A traditional heirloom: Open-pollinated and non-GMO, suited to gardeners interested in seed saving.
  • A warm-season garden crop: Bushy plants grow best with full sun, warm soil, and consistent moisture.

Growing Notes

Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your last expected frost, sowing about ΒΌ inch deep. Transplant after frost danger has passed and soil and weather have warmed. Choose full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Space plants 18–24 inches apart; in a square-foot bed, allow 1 plant per 4 sq ft for room to grow.

Water consistently and stake plants if needed to support developing fruit. Plan on about 80 days from transplanting, with roughly 74–85 days reported across seed suppliers; warmth and growing conditions affect timing. A long enough frost-free season matters more than a hardiness-zone number.

Harvest Details

Harvest while the skin is glossy and the fruit gives slightly to gentle pressure. Cut the stem rather than pulling the fruit, and avoid leaving it on the plant until the skin turns dull and the seeds become hard.
