Beit Alpha Cucumber – Sweet, Burpless, No-Peel Heirloom with Excellent Shelf Life

Beit Alpha Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is a Middle Eastern heirloom variety prized for its sweet, mild flavor, thin edible skin, and burpless quality — no peeling required. Straight, medium green fruits with very small black spines grow 5–8" long and are ready to harvest in just 50–60 days. A generally gynoecious strain that produces mostly female flowers, Beit Alpha is a heavy and reliable producer. CMR/MMR disease resistant. Non-GMO, open-pollinated, heirloom.

Note on pollination: Beit Alpha may be parthenocarpic (able to set fruit without pollination), but this is not guaranteed. We recommend planting near a monoecious cucumber variety to ensure reliable cropping.

Why Grow Beit Alpha Cucumber?

  • Burpless & no-peel — thin edible skin, reduced cucurbitacin for easy digestion
  • Sweet, mild flavor — excellent fresh eating quality
  • Gynoecious — mostly female flowers means heavier, more consistent yields
  • Good shelf life — stays fresh longer after harvest than many varieties
  • CMR/MMR disease resistant — reliable performance across conditions
  • Fast to harvest — ready in 50–60 days

Growth Habits

  • Days to Maturity: 50–60 days
  • Fruit Size: 5–8", straight, medium green, very small black spine
  • Flavor: Sweet, mild, burpless
  • Skin: Thin, edible — no peeling needed
  • Pollination: Gynoecious (mostly female flowers) — plant near monoecious variety for best yields
  • Disease Resistance: CMR/MMR

Starting & Growing Tips

  • Start indoors and transplant, or direct sow outdoors in spring
  • If starting indoors: sow 1/2" deep, move outdoors 4 weeks after last frost
  • If direct sowing: sow 1/2" deep in full sun in spring
  • Plant in warm, well-draining soil with consistent moisture
  • Full sun required
  • Plant near a monoecious cucumber variety to ensure reliable fruit set
  • Trellis support recommended for healthier plants and better airflow

Harvesting

Harvest when cucumbers reach full size at 5–8" long, typically 50–60 days after sowing. Pick individually — regular harvesting encourages continued fruit production. Beit Alpha has good shelf life after harvest, making it ideal for market growers and home gardeners alike.

Culinary Uses

Beit Alpha is exceptional for fresh eating straight from the garden — sweet, crisp, and easy to digest. Excellent sliced in salads, served with hummus and dips, used in Mediterranean dishes, or lightly pickled. The thin skin means no peeling required.

  • Fresh sliced in salads & sandwiches
  • Hummus, tzatziki & dips
