Amish Deer Tongue (Lactuca sativa) is one of the oldest American heirloom lettuces — documented before 1740 in Amish communities. Named for its distinctive pointed, tongue-shaped leaves. Exceptionally heat tolerant and slow to bolt, making it one of the best lettuces for summer growing. Tender, mild flavor. Open-pollinated and non-GMO.

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors in early spring, summer, or fall. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, thinning to 8–10 inches apart. Excellent heat tolerance — one of the few lettuces that performs well in summer. Water consistently. Harvest outer leaves as needed.
