America (Spinacia oleracea) is a 1952 All-America Selections winner developed by the Dutch seedhouse Sluis & Groot — a compact, long-standing Bloomsdale-type spinach that has earned its place in kitchen gardens for over 70 years. Also known as American and America Long Standing. Growing 8 inches tall with thick, deeply savoyed (crinkled), dark green leaves, America is slow to bolt and notably heat and drought tolerant for a spinach variety — making it an excellent choice for spring sowing when other varieties fail. Suited for fresh eating, canning, and freezing. 43–55 days.
Harvest young leaves for tender baby spinach salads. Use larger, mature leaves sautéed with garlic and olive oil as a quick side. Add to soups, stews, and pasta. Use in quiche, frittatas, and egg dishes. Blend into smoothies for a nutrition boost. The thick savoyed leaves hold up well to heat. Blanch and freeze in portions for year-round use. Can whole-leaf for the pantry.
Spinach grows best in cool weather — sow in early spring as soon as soil can be worked, or in late summer (6–8 weeks before first fall frost) for a fall crop. Sow ½ inch deep, 2 inches apart, in rows 12–18 inches apart in fertile, well-draining soil (pH 6.0–7.0). Thin to 4–6 inches when seedlings are established. For continuous harvest, make successive plantings every 10 days. Harvest continually by removing outer leaves to keep plants producing. Water consistently; avoid letting soil dry out.
