All-Purpose Garden Cover Crop Mix, Heirloom Seeds — The Complete Soil-Rebuilding Blend for Raised Beds, Boxes, and Garden Plots

The best all-purpose cover crop mix for any home garden. Why choose one cover crop when you can grow them all? This carefully assembled 9-variety blend of legumes, grains, radishes, and mustards gives your exhausted soil everything it needs to recover, rebuild, and thrive. Four nitrogen-fixing legumes replenish depleted nutrients, three fast-growing grains provide quick cover and biomass, a deep-rooted daikon radish breaks up compacted soil, and yellow mustard adds natural insecticidal properties. Broadcast sow in fall or spring, then till or cut down before seed set. Works for backyard raised beds, large farm plots, and no-till container gardens alike. Grows best during cool spring and fall seasons (40–65°F).

Why Use All-Purpose Garden Cover Crop Mix?

  • 4 nitrogen-fixing legumes — replenish depleted soil nutrients naturally
  • 3 fast-growing grains — rapid cover and biomass for soil protection
  • Deep-rooted daikon radish — breaks up compaction and aerates subsoil
  • Yellow mustard — natural insecticidal properties suppress soil pests
  • Works for raised beds, farm plots, and no-till containers — versatile at any scale
  • Pollinator-friendly bloom — clovers and mustards attract beneficial insects
  • No known insects or pests — thrives in poor, depleted soils

How to Plant

Preparation: Clear debris and weeds. Loosen soil with a rake or spring-harrow to create a suitable planting bed.

Planting: Broadcast seeds evenly over prepared soil. Lightly rake or harrow to cover seeds ½ inch deep. Water immediately, or plant just before a predicted rain shower.

Post-planting: In hot, dry weather, water regularly to ensure germination. As weather cools, watering becomes less necessary.

Fall growth: Most components germinate and grow in fall but do not reach full maturity before winter. During cold months, cover crops become dormant and resume growth as weather warms.

Termination Guide

Terminate 2–3 weeks before planting your next seasonal crop so green manure can begin decomposing.

  • Methods: String trimmer, lawn mower, or sickle — cut close to the ground
  • Incorporation (optional): Till or turn plant material into soil, or leave on surface as mulch
  • Cereal grain note: If triticale or wheat grows taller than 18–24 inches, terminate before that point to prevent root mass from becoming too large to incorporate
