Yellow Gem (Citrullus lanatus) is a heat-tolerant heirloom icebox watermelon that surprises and delights at every harvest. Large 14–16-pound oval fruits with a medium rind and bold dark stripes conceal bright yellow, crisp, very sweet flesh that stops people in their tracks — a stunning and delicious alternative to red-fleshed varieties. Heat-tolerant and reliable. Open-pollinated. 80 days.
Slice into thick wedges and serve ice-cold for summer snacking — the yellow flesh is visually striking on any table. Cube into fruit salads alongside red watermelon and cantaloupe for a colorful spread. Blend into agua fresca or lemonade. Serve at backyard cookouts and watch the reaction when guests cut into the golden interior. The crisp, very sweet flesh holds up well and has minimal seeds.
Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost, or direct sow after last frost when soil has warmed to at least 70°F. Sow 1 inch deep in rich, well-draining soil (pH 6.0–7.0) in full sun. Space plants 36 inches apart and give vines 6–8 feet to run. Water deeply and consistently — reduce watering as fruits approach maturity to concentrate sweetness. Harvest when the ground spot (belly) turns creamy yellow and the tendril nearest the fruit dries and browns completely.
