In early summer, round, green-striped melons grow vigorously, reaching up to 14 inches by August. With creamy, yellowish-white flesh and an old-fashioned sweet flavor, they thrive in cooler northern climates. Brought to Saskatchewan by Russian immigrants, these melons weigh between 4 to 10 pounds and have a thin rind that requires careful handling. Their pale green skin with dark stripes makes them a rare treat best enjoyed fresh.
