Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a hardy perennial flowering plant native to Europe and parts of Asia, now naturalized across North America. Heads of sweetly scented pink or white flowers bloom in summer months. Valerian flower extracts were used as a perfume in the 16th century, and the root has been used medicinally for centuries as a calming herb. Very low maintenance once established — naturalizes easily in open areas. 200+ seeds per packet.
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost, or direct sow outdoors in spring. Surface sow — seeds need light to germinate. Transplant outdoors in full sun to part shade, well-drained soil. Space plants 12–18 inches apart. Water consistently until established. Very low maintenance once established — naturalizes in open areas. Perennial in all U.S. zones.
