Bring a classic early-season tomato to your kitchen garden. Earliana produces red slicing tomatoes with juicy flesh and a pleasing balance of sweetness and tang, perfect for a first summer sandwich or a simple garden salad. Introduced in 1900, this open-pollinated heirloom has a long history of being grown for an early crop.
Start indoors 6β8 weeks before your intended transplant date. Sow approximately β βΒΌ inch deep in seed-starting mix, provide warmth and strong light, and harden seedlings off gradually. Transplant after frost danger has passed and soil has warmed, into full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.
Allow approximately 24β36 inches between plants, adjusting for your support and pruning system. Install cages, stakes, or a trellis early. Water consistently at soil level, mulch to conserve moisture, and maintain airflow while retaining healthy foliage to shade developing fruit. Although grown as an early variety, Earliana remains frost-tender and needs warm soil for good establishment.
For square foot gardening, use 1 plant per sq ft (trellis required) only with dedicated vertical training and regular pruning. Allow additional canopy space for caged or multi-stemmed plants.
Maturity: Approximately 60β80 days from transplant, depending on strain and growing conditions; about 65β75 days is a useful planning range.
Fruit: Rounded red slicers, commonly around 4β6 ounces, with natural size and shape variation.
Growth habit: Indeterminate, regular leaf; cage, stake, or trellis required.
Botanical name: Solanum lycopersicum.
Life cycle: Frost-tender warm-season annual.
Seed type: Open-pollinated heirloom, non-GMO.
Packet options: Approximately 25+ or 50+ seeds.
Harvest when fruit develops its mature red coloring and yields slightly to gentle pressure. Pick individual ripe tomatoes regularly for sandwiches, salads, salsa, or fresh summer meals.
