Campbell 33 Tomato Heirloom Seeds

Bring a classic processing tomato to your kitchen garden with Campbell 33. Developed for Campbell Soup Company, this open-pollinated heirloom produces meaty red fruit useful for soups and sauces as well as fresh slices. Gather ripe tomatoes for a pot of homemade soup, then save a few for lunch.

Why Grow Campbell 33?

  • Versatile red tomatoes: Firm, meaty flesh works well in soups, sauces, salads, and sandwiches.
  • Medium-to-large fruit: Often described around 7 oz, with some sources reporting 7–10 oz. Size varies with conditions.
  • Determinate growth: Bush-type plants tend toward a concentrated main crop rather than continuous tall-vine growth.
  • Earlier harvest potential: Plan on approximately 65–70 days from transplant, not a guaranteed harvest date.
  • Two packet options: Choose approximately 25 or 50 seeds.

Planting and Growing

Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before your intended transplant date. Sow approximately ΒΌ inch deep in seed-starting mix, provide warmth for germination, and give seedlings strong light. Harden off gradually before planting outdoors after frost danger has passed and soil has warmed.

Choose full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Install a cage or stake to support fruiting branches and keep tomatoes off the soil. Avoid routine heavy sucker pruning on determinate plants. Water consistently at soil level, mulch to conserve moisture, and maintain airflow around the canopy. Containers should be generously sized with drainage.

For square foot gardening, use 1 plant per sq ft (cage and extra canopy room required). Allow space beyond the planting square for the bushy canopy, or provide more room for an unpruned plant.

Harvest Details

Maturity: Approximately 65–70 days from transplant; conditions affect timing.
Fruit: Red, round to oblate, commonly around 7 oz with natural variation; some green shoulders may persist.
Growth habit: Determinate; support recommended.
Botanical name: Solanum lycopersicum.
Life cycle: Frost-tender warm-season annual.
Packet options: Approximately 25 or 50 seeds.

Harvest when fruits develop mature red color and yield slightly to gentle pressure. Check texture as well as shoulder color, and pick progressively as individual tomatoes ripen.

Some suppliers list resistance codes or cracking tolerance, but this listing does not assign a lot-specific disease-resistance rating. Resistance is not immunity, and difficult weather can still reduce fruit set or cause cracking. Consistent care remains important.
