Lower Salmon River squash is on the list of heritage Pacific Northwest winter squash varieties. Grown in the Lower Salmon River region of Idaho, possibly for generations. This rare Western heirloom is delicious, easy, early, and keeps well. It is drought-tolerant and keeps for up to a year due to its hard skin, which prevents rot and mouse damage. Fruits are generally 3-10 lbs, with an occasional jumbo 15-pounder. The flavor is sweet and rich, and the texture is solid and dry enough to be comforting but moist and smooth enough for a pie.
There are variations in shape and color--some have turbans, and some are darker--but all are peach to orange, round, and average about 5-7 lbs. 80 - 90 days.
