Sugar Magnolia Snap Peas β€” A Showstopper With Deep-Purple Pods, Bicolor Blooms & Sweet Flavor

Sugar Magnolia is the snap pea that stops people in their tracks. Deep, rich purple pods with bright-green interiors are as beautiful in the garden as they are on the plate β€” a true showstopper that delivers on flavor too. Sweet and crisp, the pods are best harvested before they fill out fully, when the sugar content is at its peak. Climbing vines stretch up to 7 feet tall, producing beautiful bicolor pink and purple-red blooms and extra-vigorous tendrils that support themselves as they grow. Even the shoots and tendrils are edible β€” a bonus harvest for salads and sautΓ©s.

Frequent, steady harvests keep plants producing all season. 70 days.

Why Grow Sugar Magnolia?

  • Stunning deep-purple pods β€” bright-green interiors, a visual showstopper
  • Sweet, crisp flavor β€” best before pods fill out for peak sugar
  • Bicolor pink & purple-red blooms β€” ornamental as well as edible
  • Edible shoots & tendrils β€” bonus harvest for salads and sautΓ©s
  • Vigorous 7 ft climbing vines β€” extra-strong tendrils for self-support
  • Open-pollinated heirloom β€” save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors 4–6 weeks before last frost in spring, or in late summer for a fall crop. Sow seeds 1 inch deep, 2–3 inches apart, in rows 18–24 inches apart. Provide a trellis or support for 7-foot vines. Water consistently. Harvest pods frequently β€” regular picking keeps plants productive. Cool weather produces the best flavor; peas slow in summer heat.
