Korean Ginseng Seeds — Panax ginseng | 5,000-Year Supreme Adaptogen, Shade-Loving Woodland Perennial, 4–6 Year Root Crop

Panax ginseng — Its name says everything. Panax — from the Greek panacea, meaning all-healing. For over 5,000 years, Asian Ginseng has been the supreme tonic herb of Traditional Chinese Medicine — the king of herbs, the root of immortality, the original and defining adaptogen. No plant on earth has been more studied: over 5,000 peer-reviewed publications and counting. No root has been more revered, more sought after, or more carefully cultivated across the centuries.

Growing ginseng from seed is not a project. It is a practice — a multi-year commitment that rewards patience with one of the most medicinally significant roots a home gardener can produce. ~20+ seeds per packet.

A Note on Germination — Read Before Sowing

Ginseng seeds require double dormancy — one of the most complex germination requirements in the plant kingdom. Seeds must undergo 4–6 months of warm stratification followed by 3–4 months of cold stratification before they will germinate. Seeds sown in fall will typically germinate the following spring after naturally cycling through both stratification periods. This is not a fast-germinating crop — patience and proper stratification are essential for success.

Why Grow Korean Ginseng?

  • The supreme adaptogen: 5,000+ years of use in TCM; over 5,000 peer-reviewed studies; the most revered medicinal root in the world
  • Rare home garden crop: Fresh ginseng root is almost never available commercially — growing your own is the only way to access it at peak potency
  • Shade-loving woodland perennial: Thrives under deciduous trees where most crops cannot grow; ideal for woodland and shade gardens
  • Long-lived investment: Roots are harvested after 4–6 years; older roots are more potent and more valuable
  • Beautiful ornamental: Elegant compound leaves and bright red berries in fall — a striking woodland plant in its own right
  • Open-pollinated — save seed from established plants year after year

Growing Notes

  • Stratification: Double dormancy required — 4–6 months warm stratification + 3–4 months cold stratification before germination; sow in fall for natural cycling
  • Light: Partial to full shade — mimics woodland floor conditions; direct sun will damage plants
  • Soil: Rich, well-drained, slightly acidic woodland soil (pH 5.5–6.0); high organic matter; excellent drainage is critical
  • Spacing: 15–20 cm (6–8 in) apart
  • Watering: Consistent moisture; never waterlogged — root rot is the primary cause of failure
  • Harvest: Roots are typically harvested after 4–6 years; older roots develop the characteristic forked shape and higher ginsenoside content
  • Companion planting: Grows naturally under deciduous hardwoods — oak, maple, and hickory are ideal companions
