Loose-Leaf Lettuce Seed Kit — 5 Heirloom Varieties, Cut-and-Come-Again All Season

Loose-leaf lettuce is the fastest, most productive lettuce you can grow — no waiting for heads to form, just snip outer leaves and the plant keeps producing. This Heirloom Loose-Leaf Lettuce Seed Kit brings together five of our favorite individual varieties, spanning green and red, frilly and flat, mild and slightly bitter — everything you need for a colorful, flavorful salad bowl from first harvest to first frost.

What's in the Kit

  • Black Seeded Simpson — the classic heirloom green loose-leaf; fast, reliable, tender, and mild; one of the most popular lettuces ever grown
  • Red Sails — deeply red, ruffled leaves; slow to bolt; AAS winner; sweet and productive all season
  • Lollo Rosso — deeply frilled, intensely red Italian heirloom; stunning in salads and on plates; slightly bitter, complex flavor
  • Royal Oakleaf — classic green oakleaf shape; tender, mild, and sweet; excellent cut-and-come-again performer
  • Grand Rapids — fast-maturing, heat-tolerant green loose-leaf; crisp, frilly, and reliable; great for succession planting

Occasionally a variety may be temporarily out of stock. When that happens, we'll substitute an equally wonderful heirloom loose-leaf variety so your kit always arrives with 5 full packets of seed.

In the Kitchen

Mix all five varieties together for a stunning multi-color salad. Use Lollo Rosso and Red Sails as a colorful base. Add Royal Oakleaf and Black Seeded Simpson for tender bulk. Toss with Grand Rapids for crunch. Dress simply with olive oil and lemon — the variety does the work.

Growing Notes

Direct sow on the soil surface — lettuce needs light to germinate; press seeds in lightly but do not cover. Sow 4–6 weeks before last frost in spring, or 6–8 weeks before first frost in fall. Thin to 6–8 inches for full plants, or leave dense for baby greens. Harvest outer leaves continuously — plants will keep producing for weeks. Succession sow every 2–3 weeks for non-stop harvest. Use shade cloth in summer heat to extend the season.
