Head Lettuce Seed Kit — 5 Heirloom Varieties, From Butterhead to Romaine

There's nothing quite like cutting a full head of lettuce straight from the garden. This Head Lettuce Seed Kit brings together five of our favorite heirloom head-forming varieties — butterheads, romaines, a crisphead, and a miniature gem — giving you a complete range of textures, flavors, and harvest sizes from one kit. Crisp, tender, and nothing like the bagged stuff at the store.

What's in the Kit

  • Boston Butterhead — the classic soft, buttery head; tender leaves with a mild, sweet flavor; a timeless heirloom
  • Parris Island Cos — the gold-standard romaine; tall, upright, crisp ribs with rich flavor; excellent for Caesar salads
  • Iceberg Crisphead — the heirloom original; dense, crunchy, mild heads; perfect for wedge salads and sandwiches
  • Tom Thumb — a miniature butterhead ideal for containers and small spaces; tennis-ball-sized heads, one per person
  • Marvel of Four Seasons — a stunning French heirloom butterhead with red-tinged outer leaves and a creamy green heart; beautiful and delicious

Occasionally a variety may be temporarily out of stock. When that happens, we'll substitute an equally wonderful heirloom head lettuce variety so your kit always arrives with 5 full packets of seed.

In the Kitchen

Use Parris Island Cos for classic Caesar salads. Halve Iceberg for wedge salads with blue cheese. Separate Boston Butterhead leaves for lettuce wraps. Serve Tom Thumb heads whole as individual salad portions. Showcase Marvel of Four Seasons on a charcuterie board — the red-tipped leaves are stunning.

Growing Notes

Direct sow or transplant 4–6 weeks before last frost in spring, or 6–8 weeks before first frost in fall. Sow ¼ inch deep, 2–3 inches apart; thin to 10–12 inches for full heads. Full sun to part shade. Keep soil consistently moist. Harvest heads when firm and full — before bolting in heat. Succession sow every 2–3 weeks for continuous harvest.
