Riesenstraube (Solanum lycopersicum) means “bunches of grapes” in German — and this 150-year-old heirloom lives up to its name. Available in Philadelphia by the mid-1800s, each cluster holds 40–50 deep red, one-inch cherry tomatoes with a classic full-bodied flavor and a hint of citrus. Low-acid and rich, these are a favorite for fresh eating and salads. Large, indeterminate plants are reliable and high-yielding. 75–85 days.
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed, spacing plants 24–36 inches apart in full sun. Stake or cage — large indeterminate plants. Water consistently. Harvest clusters when fruits are fully red.
