Stupice (pronounced Stoo-PEECH-ka) is the Czech heirloom that has become a legend in northern gardens. Brought from Czechoslovakia, this extremely early, cold-tolerant variety is one of the first tomatoes to ripen in the garden — and one of the tastiest. Small, round, 2-ounce fruits are juicy and tangy with a bright, complex flavor that belies their modest size. Compact plants with disease-resistant, potato-leaf foliage produce abundantly until frost, making Stupice the rare early tomato that doesn’t sacrifice flavor for speed.
Indeterminate, open-pollinated, 52 days. The tomato that proves early and delicious are not mutually exclusive.
Start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in fertile, well-draining soil. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart in full sun. Water consistently. Harvest when fruits are fully red and give slightly to gentle pressure. Excellent for northern gardens, high-altitude gardens, and anywhere the season is short.
