Cosmonaut Volkov (Lycopersicon lycopersicum) is of Ukrainian origin, selected by Russian space engineer-turned-avid-gardener Mikhailovich Maslov — and it will land a regular spot in your garden. Early enough for a quick Russian summer, with a taste sensation that only an heirloom can offer: rich, deep, balanced, sweet, and tangy. Indeterminate plants set generously sized, 2–3 inch, slightly squat, deep red fruits with green-tinged shoulders and bright red interiors. Heavy yields of big fruit around 4–5 inches in diameter. 72 days.
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed, spacing plants 24–36 inches apart in full sun. Stake or cage. Water consistently. Harvest when green-tinged shoulders have fully colored and fruit gives slightly to pressure. 72 days from transplant.
