Black Beauty is not just a dark tomato — it is the darkest tomato known to exist. Loaded with extreme anthocyanin — the same powerful antioxidant found in blueberries and blackberries — these remarkable fruits turn so deeply pigmented in full sun that some ripen to a solid, near-black exterior. Slice one open and you’ll find deep red, meaty flesh with a rich, smooth, savory flavor and earthy undertones that make it one of the best-tasting tomatoes you’ll ever grow.
Black Beauty hangs ripe on the vine longer than most varieties and has excellent post-harvest storage ability — it even improves with a bit of aging at room temperature. A mid-late season variety worth every day of the wait.
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed, spacing plants 24–36 inches apart in full sun. Full sun is essential for maximum anthocyanin development and darkest coloring. Water consistently. Harvest when fruits are fully dark and give slightly to gentle pressure.
