Waltham 29 — The 1950 Massachusetts Heirloom Broccoli With Prolonged Harvest and Great Side Shoots

Waltham 29 is one of the most beloved heirloom broccoli varieties in the home garden — a great-tasting, cool-climate variety developed in 1950 and named for Waltham, Massachusetts, where it was bred. Compact plants produce medium-large central heads with excellent flavor, followed by a generous crop of side shoots that extend the harvest well beyond the main head. Plants are intentionally non-uniform in maturity, resulting in a prolonged harvest period that is ideal for the home vegetable garden — rather than everything ripening at once, you harvest continuously over weeks. Easy to grow and delicious. 85 days.

Why Grow Waltham 29?

  • 1950 Massachusetts heirloom — 75+ years of proven home garden performance
  • Prolonged harvest period — non-uniform maturity means continuous picking over weeks
  • Excellent side shoot production — keeps producing long after the main head is cut
  • Medium-large heads — great flavor, compact plants
  • Cool-climate specialist — grows best in cold weather, ideal for spring & fall.
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Start 6–8 weeks before the last frost indoors for spring crops, or 10–12 weeks before the first fall frost for fall crops. Transplant outdoors when the soil is workable, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart in full sun. Broccoli prefers cool temperatures — heat causes premature bolting. Keep soil consistently moist. Harvest the central head when it is tight and firm, before the flowers open. Cut to encourage side shoot production — harvest side shoots regularly for weeks of continued yield.
