Growing Notes
Direct sow outdoors in early spring (4–6 weeks before last frost) or late summer for a fall crop. Sow ½ inch deep, 2–3 inches apart, in rows 12–18 inches apart. Thin to 6 inches — sugar beets need room to develop their large roots. Keep soil consistently moist after planting; germination takes 2–3 weeks, so be patient. Optimum temperature is 55–80°F — beets do not like heat. Harvest roots at 3–5 pounds for best sugar content and flavor.
Large-scale growers: Seeding rate is 10–15 lbs per acre. Thin aggressively to ensure adequate root development.
