Oland Swedish Brown — The Swedish Island Heirloom That Matures Faster Than Any Other Dry Bean

Oland Swedish Brown is one of the most popular dry beans in the catalog — and for good reason. Brown beans have been a staple in Sweden for hundreds of years, traditionally used in Swedish baked bean dishes, and while they were once grown across the country, Öland — an island off the southeast coast — is now the only place where they are still cultivated. This variety matures and dries down more quickly than other dry bean varieties, making it an excellent choice for short-season areas and climates where fall rains can ruin beans as they dry down. Not only early, but incredibly productive. 80 days.

Why Grow Oland Swedish Brown?

  • Swedish island heirloom — centuries of Scandinavian culinary heritage from Öland
  • Fastest-maturing dry bean — ideal for short seasons and wet fall climates
  • Incredibly productive — one of the most prolific dry beans available
  • Traditional Swedish baked bean variety — rich culinary history
  • Short-season performer — dries down before fall rains can ruin the crop
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors after last frost when soil has warmed to at least 60°F. Sow seeds 1 inch deep, 2–4 inches apart, in rows 18–24 inches apart in full sun. Keep soil consistently moist. Allow pods to fully dry on the plant before harvesting — or pull entire plants and hang to finish drying in a sheltered location if fall rains threaten.
