Cascadia Snap Pea Seeds

Pick a sweet, crunchy snack straight from a small-space garden with Cascadia snap peas. Its compact vines carry plump green pods with thick, juicy walls, ready to eat whole while tender. Grow a short supported row in a raised bed or a roomy container, then bring freshly picked pods to the table for salads, quick sautés, or steaming.

Why Grow Cascadia?

  • Sweet edible pods: Enjoy both the fleshy pod and developing peas; pick before pods turn tough.
  • Compact vines: Commonly around 2–3 feet tall, with height varying by growing conditions. Low support helps keep vines upright and pods easier to pick.
  • Useful harvest size: Pods are commonly about 3 inches long, with some supplier descriptions reaching 3½ inches.
  • Cool-season garden choice: Suitable for spring planting and appropriately timed fall crops where the season allows.
  • Open-pollinated variety: Developed by Oregon State University's pea-breeding program and documented in 1993, rather than an old traditional heirloom.

Growing Notes

Direct sow in early spring as soon as soil is workable and well drained. Approximately 4–6 weeks before the last expected frost can suit some gardens, but avoid planting into saturated, cold soil where seeds may rot. For fall planting, count backward from local cold-weather conditions and allow extra time as daylight shortens. Peas perform best in cool weather; summer heat can shorten the harvest.

Sow approximately 1–1½ inches deep and 1–2 inches apart in rows with room for access. For square foot gardening, use 8 plants per sq ft (low support recommended). Provide full sun and consistent moisture without waterlogging. Install a short trellis, netting, or pea brush early so tendrils can catch it as the vines grow. For containers, choose adequate root room, drainage, and a firmly anchored low support.

Cascadia has documented resistance to pea enation mosaic virus, and suppliers also report powdery mildew resistance. Resistance is not immunity; maintain airflow and monitor plant health rather than relying on resistance alone.

Harvest Details

Maturity: Approximately 60–70 days from direct sowing under favorable conditions; cold early sowings can take longer.
Pods: Green, thick-walled edible snap pods, commonly about 3 inches long.
Flavor: Sweet and crisp when picked young and tender.
Growth habit: Compact vines, commonly around 2–3 feet tall; low support recommended.
Best uses: Fresh snacking, salads, quick sautés, and steaming.
Botanical name: Pisum sativum.
Type: Modern open-pollinated, non-GMO snap pea grown as a cool-season annual.
Seeds per packet: Approximately 25, 50, or 100 seeds, according to the option selected.

Harvest when pods are plump but still tender, before the peas become hard and the pod walls fibrous. Remove any strings you find along the seams. Pick regularly while plants are producing, supporting the vine with one hand as you harvest to avoid pulling it loose.
