Cucurbita pepo — Spookie is the pumpkin that does it all. A cross between Jack O’ Lantern and Sugar Pie, developed by Northrup King & Company of Minneapolis, Spookie inherits the best traits of both parents: the carving form of a jack-o’-lantern and the sweet, thick, fine-textured flesh of a pie pumpkin. Smooth, hard red-orange skin. 6–10 lbs, about 7 inches across. Exceptionally high yields of strong-stemmed, uniform pumpkins. 100 days.
Roast halved pumpkin for pies, soups, and muffins — the sweet, fine-textured flesh is exceptional for baking. Cube and roast with olive oil and spices. Purée for pumpkin butter and bread. Toast the seeds with salt and olive oil.
Plant seeds outdoors after all frost risk has passed and soil temperature reaches 65°F. Plant 3–5 seeds 1 inch deep per mound; thin to 2 strongest seedlings after germination (6–10 days). Water deeply but infrequently. Harvest when skin is fully orange; cut with a 2–3 inch stem attached.
