Cornflowers — also known as Bachelor Buttons — are one of the most cheerful and versatile heirloom flowers you can grow. This patriotic red, white, and blue mix produces an abundance of bright, long-stem blooms from early summer through fall, bringing continuous color to beds, borders, and meadow gardens. The flowers are fully edible — fresh petals add a pop of color and mild flavor to salads, while dried flowers are popular for arrangements, handmade papers, and potpourri.
Easy to grow, self-seeding, and beloved by pollinators — a classic cottage garden flower that earns its place every season.
Direct sow outdoors in early spring (4–6 weeks before last frost) or in fall for early spring blooms. Scatter seeds on the soil surface and press in lightly — cornflowers need light to germinate. Thin to 6–8 inches apart. Water consistently until established. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming. Cornflowers self-seed readily — allow some plants to go to seed for naturalized plantings that return year after year.
