Sumter Cucumber Seeds — Heirloom Organic | 5–6 Inch Blocky Pickling Cucumber, Disease-Resistant, 50 Days

Cucumis sativus — Sumter is the workhorse pickling cucumber — an early-maturing, disease-resistant heirloom that delivers consistent, high-quality 5–6 inch fruits with the blocky, tapered form and crisp, dense texture that makes a great pickle. Medium-green skin with small white spines. Mild, slightly sweet flavor. Resistant to Powdery Mildew, Downy Mildew, Alternaria Leaf Spot, and Scab; tolerant to Cucumber Mosaic Virus. Monoecious. Suitable for fields, raised beds, containers (with support), and greenhouses. 50 days to maturity.

Why Grow Sumter?

  • Outstanding disease resistance — resistant to Powdery Mildew, Downy Mildew, Alternaria Leaf Spot, and Scab; tolerant to Cucumber Mosaic Virus and some strains of Anthracnose
  • Early maturity — 50 days from direct sow; one of the faster-maturing pickling cucumbers available
  • Classic pickling form — blocky, tapered 5–6 inch fruits with small white spines; dense, crisp texture that holds up in brine
  • Mild, slightly sweet flavor — excellent fresh as well as pickled
  • Versatile growing — performs in fields, raised beds, containers with support, and greenhouses
  • Organic, open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

In the Kitchen & Pantry

  • Dill pickles: The definitive use — pack whole or spear into jars with dill, garlic, and brine; the dense flesh holds its crunch through processing.
  • Bread & butter pickles: Slice thin with onion in a sweet vinegar brine
  • Quick refrigerator pickles: Ready in 24 hours; no canning required
  • Fresh slicing: Mild, sweet flavor is excellent fresh in salads and with dips
  • Fermented pickles: Lacto-ferment whole in salt brine for probiotic-rich half-sours

Growing Notes

  • Season: Warm-season annual; plant after all frost risk has passed
  • Direct sow: After last frost when soil reaches 65°F; germination best at 75–85°F in 6–10 days
  • Depth: 1 inch
  • Spacing: 18–24 inches apart; rows 48 inches apart
  • Support: Vining habit — trellis vertically for better airflow, cleaner fruit, and easier harvest
  • Soil: Rich, well-draining; pH 6.0–6.8; consistent moisture critical for yield and flavor
  • Temperature: Optimal 64–86°F; damaged below 50°F; does not tolerate frost
  • Light: Full sun
  • Harvest: Pick at 5–6 inches for pickling; harvest frequently to keep vines producing
