Cucurbita pepo — Montana Jack was bred by the legendary plant breeder John Navazio while living in Montana — specifically designed to ripen early for gardeners with short growing seasons. Often fully orange by mid-August from a June transplanting. Fruit averages 8–10 lbs with good variation in size and shape; most are more round than tall. Average of four fruits per plant. Delicious flavor — excellent for pies as well as carving. Rare and hard-to-find. 75 days to maturity.
Plant seeds outdoors after frost risk has passed — can be planted as late as June or July in most climates. Plant 3–5 seeds 1 inch deep per mound; thin to 2 strongest seedlings. Water deeply but infrequently. Harvest when skin is fully orange; cut with a 2–3 inch stem attached.
