Kagraner Sommer (Lactuca sativa) β also sold as βKagran Summerβ β is a reliable, mid-season butterhead heirloom reported to have originated in Germany. Slow to bolt in summer heat, it grows a loose head of tender, pale green leaves reaching 5β10 inches tall. Because Kagraner Sommer has a shallow root system and takes up very little space, it is one of the best crops for raised beds and containers. A dependable, easy-to-grow butterhead that performs when others struggle. 58 days.
Direct sow outdoors in early spring or fall, or start indoors 3β4 weeks before transplanting. Sow seeds β inch deep β lettuce needs light to germinate, so barely cover. Thin to 6 plants per square foot or 12 inches apart in rows 18 inches apart. Full sun to part shade. Keep soil consistently moist. Harvest outer leaves when 6 inches long for cut-and-come-again, or cut the whole head 1 inch from the soil β a new head will form. 58 days from direct sow.
