White Wonder (Cucumis sativus) was developed by Burpee around 1890 and is known by many names — Albino, Long White, Ivory King, Jack Frost, Landreth’s White Slicing, and White Albino — but all refer to the same remarkable cucumber: a creamy ivory-white, 7–9 inch fruit that is productive, vigorous, heat tolerant, and genuinely unlike anything else in the garden. Mild, slightly sweet, 95% water, and rich in Vitamins A, C, D, Folate, and Calcium. Excellent for slicing and salads; pick smaller for pickling. 35–60 days.
Slice into salads for a striking visual contrast with green vegetables. Dice with herbs and stir into yogurt for a quick tzatziki or raita. Eat straight from the vine as a hydrating summer snack. Pickle in vinegar brine when harvested smaller. Add to cold noodle salads and summer soups for a refreshing crunch.
Direct sow after last frost when soil temperature reaches 70°F, or start indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting. Cucumbers grow best on a hill or mound — plant several seeds per mound and thin to the strongest plant. Sow 1 inch deep in fertile, moist, well-draining soil in full sun. Use trellis or fence support. Water consistently — cucumbers are 95% water and need even moisture. Harvest at 8 inches for slicing; pick smaller for pickling. Harvest frequently to keep vines producing.
Watch for: Cucumber beetles, squash bugs, squash vine borers. Practice crop rotation to reduce pest pressure.
