Golden Detroit Beet — The No-Bleed, No-Earthy-Taste Heirloom That’s Even Sweeter Than Red Beets

Golden Detroit (Beta vulgaris) is the beet for people who love beets — and the beet that converts people who don’t. Orange-gold roots with golden-yellow flesh that is even sweeter than deep red beets, with none of the earthy taste that puts some people off. No bleeding, no staining, no pink countertops. Slice them fresh from the garden when almost golden-orange and toss raw into salads — mild, sweet, and surprisingly un-earthy. Cook them and they turn a beautiful buttercup yellow, retaining a silky smooth sweetness all the way through. The stalks stay dark green like other beets, but the veins take on a brighter red-orange shade that’s beautiful in the garden. A triple-harvest variety: baby greens at 35 days, full leaf greens at 50 days, roots at 55–60 days. Container friendly. 55–60 days.

Why Grow Golden Detroit?

  • Even sweeter than red beets — golden-orange flesh with silky smooth flavor raw or cooked
  • No bleeding, no staining — turns buttercup yellow when cooked; no mess
  • No earthy taste — mild and sweet raw; great for beet skeptics
  • Triple harvest — baby greens at 35 days, full greens at 50 days, roots at 55–60 days
  • Container friendly — grows well in containers and raised beds
  • Stays tender as it grows — remains tender up to 3–4 inches in diameter
  • Succession sow every 2–3 weeks — for continuous season-long harvests
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow 4–5 weeks before last spring frost or 4–5 weeks before first autumn frost. Sow ½ inch deep, 1–2 inches apart, in rows 12 inches apart in fertile, organically rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Pre-soak seeds 24 hours to encourage germination (germinates in 5–14 days). Thin to 3–4 inches as true leaves establish. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers — they produce lush tops but smaller roots. Mulch to keep roots cool and retain moisture. Sow every 2–3 weeks for continuous harvest. Harvest greens at 2–3 inches tall — small tender greens fresh in salads, larger greens lightly sautéed. Harvest roots at 1–3 inches in diameter for best flavor; remains tender up to 3–4 inches.
