Start your fresh-tomato season with Early Girl. This early-maturing F1 hybrid produces bright red, round to slightly flattened tomatoes with juicy, meaty flesh and full tomato flavor. The handy 4–6 ounce size suits a first BLT, a bowl of garden salad, or a quick batch of fresh salsa while later varieties are still developing.
Slice ripe Early Girl tomatoes for BLTs or layer them with mozzarella and basil. Dice into salsa or bruschetta, quarter into salads, or roast with garlic and olive oil for a simple sauce base. Let their fresh tomato flavor lead, with just a little salt and a few garden herbs.
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before your intended transplant date. Sow approximately ¼ inch deep in seed-starting mix, provide warmth and strong light, and harden seedlings off gradually. Transplant after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed. Choose full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.
Space plants approximately 24–36 inches apart, adjusting for your training system. Install a sturdy cage, stake, or trellis early to support the indeterminate vines. Water consistently at soil level, mulch to conserve moisture, and maintain airflow. Consistent moisture helps reduce cracking and calcium-uptake problems, but does not guarantee blemish-free fruit.
For square foot gardening, use 1 plant per sq ft (trellis required) only with dedicated vertical training and regular pruning. Give caged or multi-stemmed plants additional canopy space.
Watch for hornworms, aphids, and whiteflies. Rotate with non-solanaceous crops and limit soil splash onto foliage. Published Early Girl listings report resistance to Fusarium wilt races 1 and 2 and Verticillium wilt. Resistance is not immunity; confirm your supplier's seed-lot specifications before relying on additional resistance claims.
