Cal Ace Tomato Heirloom Seeds

Grow meaty red slicers for summer sandwiches with Cal Ace. This open-pollinated heirloom is an improved Ace-type tomato with smooth, round to oblate fruits and sweet, balanced flavor. Slice a ripe tomato for lunch or turn a basket of fruit into a fresh garden sauce.

Why Grow Cal Ace?

  • Red slicing tomatoes: Smooth skin and a gently flattened shape make attractive slices without expecting purple fruit.
  • Meaty texture: Enjoy fresh in sandwiches, salads, and tomato platters, or cook into sauces.
  • Medium-to-large fruit: Source descriptions vary from averages near 7 oz to larger 8–16 oz fruit. Size depends on selection and growing conditions, not a guaranteed weight.
  • Generally determinate growth: Bushy plants benefit from cages or stakes and room for their canopy; some suppliers describe semi-determinate selections.
  • Two packet options: Choose approximately 25 or 50 seeds.

Planting and Growing

Start indoors 6–8 weeks before your intended transplant date. Sow approximately ΒΌ inch deep in seed-starting mix, provide warmth for germination, and give seedlings strong light. Harden off gradually before planting outdoors after frost danger has passed and soil has warmed.

Choose full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Install a sturdy cage or stake at planting to support fruiting branches. Avoid routine heavy sucker pruning on determinate plants. Water consistently at soil level, mulch to conserve moisture, and maintain airflow around the canopy.

For square foot gardening, use 1 plant per sq ft (cage and extra canopy room required). Allow space beyond the planting square for branching growth, or provide more room for an unpruned bush.
