Bull's Blood is an older cultivar beloved for its stunningly beautiful dark red-purple tops and remarkable flavor ā a true dual-purpose beet that delivers two harvests from one planting. Thriving in cool summer temperatures, it is also notably tolerant of heat and humidity, making it an exceptional choice for both ornamental and culinary use. The leaves maintain their deep red-purple color throughout the season, adding dramatic visual interest to garden beds and containers. For salad mix, sow very thickly and cut in about 28 days ā if kept moist and well-fertilized, the roots will regrow for another cutting. Grow on to full maturity and the dark red roots deliver good quality, sweetness, and higher nutritional value than many other beet varieties. Greens ready in 28ā35 days, roots in 40ā52 days.
Direct sow outdoors 4ā6 weeks before last frost or in late summer for fall harvest ā beets prefer cool weather but Bull's Blood handles heat and humidity well. Sow seeds ½ inch deep, 3 inches apart, in rows 12ā18 inches apart. Thin to 3 inches apart for root production. For salad mix, sow very thickly and do not thin ā cut at 28 days and keep moist for regrowth. Full sun to part shade. Prefers light, moist soil with a pH of 6.5ā7.0. Harvest roots when 1ā3 inches in diameter for best flavor.
