The Complete Sunflower Planting Guide: From Seed to Bloom

Sunflowers are among the most rewarding flowers to grow from seed—bold, cheerful, and surprisingly easy to cultivate. Whether you're planting towering giants that reach for the sky or compact varieties perfect for containers, this guide will help you grow stunning sunflowers from our heirloom seed collection.

When to Plant Sunflowers

Timing is everything when it comes to sunflower success. These sun-loving annuals thrive when planted at just the right moment:

  • After last spring frost: Wait until soil temperatures reach 50-60°F
  • Regional timing:
    • Zones 3-4: Late May to early June
    • Zones 5-6: Mid-April to late May
    • Zones 7-8: Early April to mid-May
    • Zones 9-10: March to April or September to October
  • Succession planting: Sow every 2-3 weeks through early July for continuous blooms into fall

Choosing the Right Sunflower Variety

We offer a diverse selection of heirloom sunflowers, each with unique characteristics to suit different garden spaces and purposes.

For Small Spaces & Containers

Teddy Bear Sunflower with fluffy double petals

Teddy Bear Sunflower – This adorable dwarf variety grows just 2-3 feet tall with fluffy, double-petaled blooms in bright yellow. Perfect for borders, containers, or children's gardens. The 4-6 inch blooms add a cheerful pop of color without overwhelming small spaces.

Sunspot Dwarf Sunflower golden blooms

Sunspot Dwarf Sunflower – Don't let the compact 2.5-3 foot height fool you—this variety produces impressive 10-inch golden blooms with rich brown centers. Ideal for creating low hedges or screens, and a magnet for birds and butterflies.

For Mid-Height Gardens

Lemon Queen Sunflower pale yellow blooms

Lemon Queen Sunflower – A branching beauty that reaches 5-7 feet with soft, pale yellow blooms. This drought-tolerant variety matures in just 75-85 days and produces multiple 10-inch flowers per plant. Excellent for cutting gardens and attracting pollinators.

Earth Walker Sunflower with deep colored blooms

Earth Walker Sunflower – A stunning late-season bloomer with deeply colored petals in rich earth tones. This branching variety extends your sunflower season into fall, maturing in 75-85 days with multiple blooms per plant.

For Dramatic Height & Giant Blooms

Mammoth Sunflower towering giant variety

Mammoth Sunflower – A classic giant that soars 9-12 feet tall with blooms up to 12 inches across. This heavy seed producer is perfect for creating living screens, feeding birds, or simply making a bold statement in the garden.

Mongolian Giant Sunflower enormous blooms

Mongolian Giant Sunflower – The ultimate showstopper, reaching up to 14 feet with blooms that can span 18 inches! Vibrant yellow petals surround massive seed heads filled with edible seeds. Deer-resistant and unforgettable.

How to Plant Sunflowers

Site Selection

  • Full sun: 6-8 hours minimum daily
  • Well-drained soil: Sunflowers tolerate various soil types but need good drainage
  • Wind protection: Stake tall varieties or plant near structures for support

Soil Preparation

  • pH 6.0-7.5 (sunflowers are adaptable)
  • Work in compost or aged manure for nutrient-rich soil
  • Ensure excellent drainage—sunflowers don't tolerate wet feet

Planting Instructions

  • Depth: 1 to 1.5 inches deep
  • Spacing:
    • Dwarf varieties (Teddy Bear, Sunspot): 6-12 inches apart
    • Medium varieties (Lemon Queen, Earth Walker): 12-18 inches apart
    • Giant varieties (Mammoth, Mongolian Giant): 24-36 inches apart
  • Direct sow preferred: Sunflowers develop deep taproots and don't transplant well
  • Germination: Expect sprouts in 7-10 days at 70-85°F

Care & Maintenance

Watering

Water deeply but infrequently once established. Young seedlings need consistent moisture, but mature plants are surprisingly drought-tolerant. Water at the base to prevent fungal issues.

Fertilizing

Sunflowers aren't heavy feeders. In nutrient-rich soil, they'll thrive with minimal fertilization. If needed, apply a balanced fertilizer when plants are about a foot tall.

Support

Stake tall varieties in windy locations. Install stakes early to avoid damaging roots later.

Pest Management

Watch for birds and squirrels as seeds mature. Cover heads with netting or paper bags if you're saving seeds. Deer generally avoid sunflowers, making them excellent for rural gardens.

Days to Maturity

Most sunflower varieties bloom 70-110 days from sowing:

  • Fast bloomers (75-85 days): Lemon Queen, Earth Walker
  • Standard timing (90-100 days): Teddy Bear, Sunspot, Mammoth
  • Longer season (100-110 days): Mongolian Giant, collection varieties

Seed Saving for Future Seasons

As an heirloom seed company, we're passionate about seed saving and preserving biodiversity. Here's how to save sunflower seeds:

  1. Allow heads to fully mature on the stalk
  2. Watch for the back of the head to turn yellow-brown
  3. Seeds should be plump and striped (not hollow)
  4. Cut heads with 12 inches of stem attached
  5. Hang in a dry, well-ventilated area
  6. Once completely dry, rub seeds free and store in a cool, dry place

All our sunflower varieties are open-pollinated heirlooms, meaning you can save seeds year after year and maintain the same beautiful characteristics.
