Tom Thumb — The 1899 Compact Popcorn for Short Seasons and Small Spaces

Listed in the 1899 John Lewis Child’s catalog as Golden Tom Thumb Popcorn, this compact heirloom was bred for city and village lots where space is at a premium. Plants reach just 2–3.5 feet tall and produce many small cobs — 2–4 inches long — that pop into delicious popcorn and make charming autumn decorations. Very early and productive, Tom Thumb is the best popcorn for short-season areas and coastal gardens. A true dwarf variety that delivers full popcorn performance in a fraction of the space.

Why Grow Tom Thumb?

  • 1899 heirloom — over 125 years of compact garden performance
  • 2–3.5 foot dwarf plants — perfect for small spaces, city lots & containers
  • Very early and productive — the best popcorn for short-season areas
  • 2–4 inch cobs — delicious popcorn and charming fall decorations
  • Suitable for coastal & short-season gardens
  • Open-pollinated heirloom — save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Sow seeds outdoors 1 inch deep after danger of frost has passed. For good pollination and full ears, plant in blocks of 3–6 rows instead of one long row. Thin seedlings to 8 inches apart. Corn is a heavy feeder — does best in well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of water. Harvest when cobs have dried entirely on the plant, then store in a cool, dry location before popping.
