Tom Thumb, Popcorn
In the 1899 John Lewis Child's catalog, there was a variety of popcorn called Golden Tom Thumb Popcorn. It has compact growth that is suitable for city or village lots. The plants are very productive, reaching 2 feet in height and producing many small cobs about 2-3 inches long. The popcorn produced is delicious and pops very nicely. The small golden cobs can also be used for autumn decorations. This variety is known for being very early and productive, making it the best popcorn for short-season areas.
Additionally, there is a dwarf variety with 3.5-foot plants that produce 1-2 ears each, measuring up to 4 inches long, and is suitable for coastal and short-season areas. Green Thumb Tip
Sow seeds outdoors 1" deep after danger of frost has passed. For good pollination and full ears, plant in blocks of 3-6 rows instead of one long row. Thin seedlings to 8" apart. Corn is a heavy feeder and does best in well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of water.
