Tennis Ball was among Thomas Jefferson's favorite lettuce varieties. He noted that "it does not require so much care and attention" as other types. Rather, loose heads are petite, 4-6 inches in diameter, and are Bibb or Butterhead type. It used to be pickled in brine and served as a side dish. The taste and texture of this lettuce were out of this world! The Tennis Ball is distinctive for its delicate, pale-green leaves forming a loosehead. Compact heads work well planted close together in tighter spaces. Black-seeded. Butterhead, 50 days.
