Red Giant Mustard, Heirloom Seeds β€” The Winter-Hardy Purple-Red Mustard That Grows Under Snow

Red Giant Mustard (Brassica juncea) is the large-leaved, reddish-purple mustard green prized for baby salad and braising mixes β€” an extremely attractive, flavorful variety with large leaves that deepen in color and improve in flavor after frost. Harvest leaf by leaf for weeks of continuous production and enjoy the fine display of color throughout the season. Frost doesn't just tolerate Red Giant; it improves it. Extremely winter hardy, Red Giant will grow outside through the winter, even under snow. Highly productive and slow to bolt. Baby greens in 20 days, full maturity at 40 days.

Why Grow Red Giant Mustard?

  • Grows under snow β€” extremely winter hardy, one of the toughest greens available
  • Frost deepens color and improves flavor β€” better after cold snaps
  • Large reddish-purple leaves β€” prized for baby salad and braising mixes
  • Harvest leaf by leaf for weeks β€” continuous production all season
  • Highly productive and slow to bolt β€” extended harvest season
  • Open-pollinated heirloom β€” save seed year after year

Growing Notes

Direct sow outdoors in late summer for fall/winter harvest, or in early spring 4–6 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds ΒΌ inch deep, 1–2 inches apart. Thin to 6 inches. Full sun to part shade. Water consistently. Harvest leaf by leaf for extended production β€” do not uproot the whole plant. Color and flavor improve after frost.
