The Black Diamond watermelon is an old heirloom from the 1950s. It is a classic oblong watermelon with a dark green/black rind covering bright red, crisp, and flavorful flesh. It gets its name from the big yellow spot that forms where the rind rests on the ground. The "yellow belly" develops on the underside of the otherwise deep green rind as the melons ripen. In the 1950s, Black Diamond was a very popular home garden variety. The fruit has gray-black seeds, perfect for seed-spitting contests, and can grow quite large. Stores well. 90 - 95 days to maturity.
