Arancino (Cucumis melo) is an Italian cantaloupe from Sicily — a high-production heirloom with fragrant aroma and rich bright orange flesh. Small to medium fruits measure 6–8 inches in diameter and weigh 2–4 pounds with a netted exterior and firm texture. Excellent for single servings, market farm production, and home gardens. Open-pollinated. 75–85 days.
Start indoors in 2–4 inch pots from mid-May through mid-June. Transplant into the garden with 2-foot centers one week after sprouting. May also be direct sown when soil is warm. Frost-sensitive — benefit from row cover. Protect from birds while sprouting and from insects when young. To save seeds, scoop out when eating, rinse, and dry.
