Peppercorns. No spice cabinet is complete without Black Pepper, and here's an opportunity to grow your very own! This vining, tropical plant will bloom and yield long strands of zesty peppercorns that start out green and ripen to a rich red. Harvested at various stages of ripeness and then processed, you can produce green, red, white, and black peppercorns all from one plant. Each peppercorn color offers a different flavor and aroma. The plant produces excellent yields of black peppercorns. Peppercorns are dried and used to make black pepper. You can grow this tropical tree in containers and bring it indoors in the fall. Try growing your own black pepper plant. These tender plants require protection when temperatures drop, so bring them into a bright window during cooler months.

Peppercorns can take up to 45 days to germinate! Black pepper requires rich soil, plenty of water, humid conditions, and partial shade. Plant seeds indoors ½" deep. For proper germination, the seeds must be kept damp and remain at 50% humidity or higher and 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. After the seeds have germinated, keep the soil moist and prevent it from drying out. Transplant in larger pots as the seedling grows.
