Sakurajima (Raphanus sativus) is the largest radish in the world — a traditional variety grown in the Sakurajima region of southern Japan, producing large, round, white roots with a basketball-like shape that average 5–10 pounds and have been known to reach up to 100 pounds. Sweet, mild flavor makes Sakurajima excellent for pickling and cooking. Best harvested when roots reach about 10 inches in diameter for peak flavor and texture. A genuinely extraordinary heirloom for adventurous gardeners and anyone who wants to grow something truly remarkable. 80 days.
Direct sow in late summer for fall harvest. Sow seeds ½ inch deep in deep, loose, fertile, well-draining soil. Thin to 12–18 inches apart — these roots need room to develop. Full sun. Water consistently and deeply. Harvest at 80 days when roots reach about 10 inches in diameter.
